BA Spanish and Linguistics (with a year abroad)
About this course
Spanish and linguistics is a combination that develops you as both a proficient user of one of the world's most widely spoken languages and as a scientific analyst of how language itself works. Spanish, with more than 500 million speakers spread across Europe, the Americas, and beyond, opens access to a vast range of cultures, literatures, and professional contexts. Linguistics provides the intellectual tools to understand what language is: how its structures work, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities, and how it changes over time, across regions, and in different social contexts. At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you a sustained period of immersion in a Spanish-speaking country that is essential for developing genuine fluency and cultural understanding. You will learn Spanish in the context of its history, politics, and cultures, developing your ability to communicate with precision and confidence in professional and academic contexts. The linguistics strand deepens your understanding of Spanish as a linguistic system while also introducing you to broader questions in phonology, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics. A sandwich year gives you professional experience, and work placement opportunities are integrated throughout. Graduates from Spanish and linguistics programmes are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, language teaching, international business, journalism, the foreign service, and applied linguistics. The analytical skills the linguistics component develops are also valued in speech and language therapy, computational linguistics, and academic research. Postgraduate study in Spanish studies, linguistics, translation, and TESOL is a natural progression, and York's combination of excellent language teaching and research-active linguistics staff makes it a strong platform for further study.
