BA Spanish and Linguistics
About this course
Spanish and linguistics is a combination that allows you to develop fluency in one of the world's most widely spoken languages while also developing a rigorous scientific understanding of how language itself works. Linguistics is the systematic study of language as a human phenomenon, examining sound systems, grammar, meaning, how language is used in social contexts, how it changes over time, and how it is acquired by children and learned by adults. Applied to Spanish, it gives you not just proficiency but a deep understanding of what that proficiency consists of and how it varies across the huge geographical and social range of the Spanish-speaking world. At Manchester Metropolitan University this four-year programme develops both the practical language skills and the theoretical linguistic knowledge you need to operate as a professional in cross-cultural and multilingual environments. You will study Spanish language and culture alongside linguistics modules covering phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition. The combination trains a particular analytical sensitivity to language that is valuable both in professional contexts where communication across cultural and linguistic differences is central and in academic or educational settings where understanding how language works is directly relevant to the work. Graduates from Spanish and linguistics programmes work in a wide range of fields. Language teaching, in schools and in language schools, is a major destination, and the linguistics background is a strong preparation for teacher training. Translation and interpreting, speech and language therapy (with additional training), publishing, broadcasting, communications, and the technology sector, where natural language processing and computational linguistics are growing fields, are all accessible to graduates with this combination. The Spanish proficiency itself opens careers in international business, tourism, diplomacy, and any sector with significant operations in Spanish-speaking markets. Further study in linguistics, applied linguistics, or translation studies is also available.
