BA Spanish and International Relations
About this course
Spanish and international relations is a pairing that speaks directly to the realities of a globalised world. Spanish is one of the world's great languages, spoken as a first language by more than 480 million people across Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of the United States and Africa. International relations provides the analytical framework for understanding the diplomatic, political, economic, and security relationships that bind and sometimes divide states, institutions, and peoples across borders. Combining the two equips you to engage with the world not just analytically but linguistically and culturally. At the University of Westminster this three-year, full-time programme focuses on questions of governance, democracy, and human rights, while training you as a competent Spanish linguist ready to enter graduate employment. You will study international relations theory, global politics, and the policy debates shaping the contemporary world alongside Spanish language development and engagement with Spanish-speaking cultures, histories, and literatures. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities are all built into the programme, giving you professional experience and direct immersive exposure to Spanish-speaking contexts. Graduates with this combination are well placed for careers in international diplomacy and foreign affairs, NGOs and international development, journalism, think tanks, international business, and multilateral organisations. The ability to work in both English and Spanish and to bring rigorous political analysis to complex global questions is valued by employers across a wide range of sectors. Westminster's London location places you close to a major concentration of international organisations, embassies, media outlets, and global businesses. Further study in international relations, Spanish, translation, or international law is available for those who want to deepen their expertise.
