Spanish and Beginners Czech with Slovak is one of the most intellectually ambitious language combinations available in UK higher education. Spanish is one of the world's great languages, the official tongue of twenty countries across two continents and spoken by hundreds of millions of people. Czech is a Slavic language with a rich literary and intellectual tradition, spoken in the Czech Republic and closely related to Slovak. Studying both languages together means working within two very different linguistic families, the Romance and the Slavic, and developing a comparative perspective on language itself that is genuinely illuminating. The cultural territories they open up, from Cervantes and Borges to Kafka and Havel, are among the most significant in world literature. At the University of Oxford, this four-year full-time programme is one of the most demanding language degrees in the country, taught within an institution with exceptional expertise in modern languages and linguistics. The Oxford tutorial system means you will receive intensive individual academic supervision as well as attending lectures and classes, and the standard expected is very high. The Czech component begins at beginner level, making it accessible even to students with no prior knowledge of Slavic languages, and progresses through the four years to a level of genuine reading and communicative competence. Spanish is studied at a more advanced level throughout, with a strong emphasis on literature, cultural history, and linguistic analysis. You will develop not just fluency in two languages but the analytical framework to understand how languages work, how they differ, and how the societies and cultures they carry have shaped one another. Research and writing skills are developed to a very high standard through the Oxford curriculum. Graduates go on to careers in translation, interpreting, journalism, diplomacy, international business, law, and the European institutions, where the combination of Spanish and a less commonly studied Slavic language is genuinely distinctive. Academic research, postgraduate study in Hispanic or Slavonic studies, and comparative literature are also strong routes. The combination opens career doors in both the Spanish-speaking world and in Central and Eastern European contexts.
