BEng Software Engineering
About this course
Software engineering is the discipline of building the systems that make modern computing possible. It goes well beyond writing code: software engineers design the architecture of complex systems, manage the processes through which software is developed and maintained, ensure that systems are reliable, secure and scalable, and work in teams to deliver software that meets real user needs within real constraints of time and resources. Almost every aspect of modern life now depends on software, and the people who build it well are in sustained demand. At the University of Bradford, the three-year full-time BEng programme includes a foundation year for students who want additional preparation before beginning the full degree. You will study the core areas of software engineering, including programming, data structures and algorithms, software architecture, systems design, testing, version control and project management. Bradford's emphasis on creating software that benefits society shapes the character of the degree, and you will develop both technical competence and an awareness of the ethical and social dimensions of building systems that affect people's lives. Bradford is a city with a growing technology sector and a university with strong community connections, and the degree is designed to develop graduates who can apply their skills effectively in a wide range of professional environments. Software engineering graduates work across virtually every sector of the economy. Roles include software developer, systems engineer, software architect, DevOps engineer, test engineer, technical lead and technology consultant. The technology industry is the largest employer, but financial services, healthcare, government, retail and manufacturing all employ software engineers. Postgraduate study in computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence or cybersecurity is a common route for those who want to specialise or move into research.
