About this course
Sociology is the study of society in all its complexity: how social structures, institutions, cultures, and inequalities shape the lives of individuals and groups. It asks how patterns of class, race, gender, and age produce different outcomes for different people, how institutions such as education, the family, the media, and the state operate, and how social change happens. Criminology applies those critical tools specifically to crime and the criminal justice system, asking who gets criminalised and why, how police, courts, and prisons function, and what justice actually means in a society marked by inequality. At the University of Chichester, this BA (Hons) Sociology with Criminology allows you to apply sociological frameworks to the criminal justice system and the role it plays within society. You will develop the research, analytical, and critical thinking skills that characterise sociological inquiry, learning to work with both quantitative data and qualitative approaches. The programme includes an integrated foundation year, making it accessible to students who wish to build confidence in academic study before progressing to the full degree. You will study for three years of full-time study following the foundation year. Entry typically requires around 104 UCAS tariff points. Graduates work in social research, the criminal justice system, social work, community development, local government, the voluntary sector, and a wide range of roles that require the ability to understand and analyse social patterns. The skills in argument, evidence evaluation, and written communication that sociology and criminology develop transfer readily into policy, education, journalism, and public sector careers. Many students continue to postgraduate study in sociology, criminology, social work, or related disciplines.
