BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of human social life, groups, and societies, asking how we are shaped by the social structures and institutions we inhabit and how, in turn, we reproduce and sometimes challenge them. It encompasses everything that falls within the social realm: family and kinship, class and inequality, ethnicity and identity, religion and secularisation, work and economy, politics and power, gender and sexuality. Sociologists apply a distinctive set of theoretical tools and research methods to these questions, moving between the concrete details of social life and the large-scale structures that give those details their meaning. At the University of Winchester, this three-year full-time degree develops your ability to ask new sociological questions and to answer them with confidence, using both the accumulated knowledge of the discipline and the research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, through which sociological understanding is built. You will engage with the classical theorists who founded the discipline and with contemporary sociological debates about globalisation, social change, digital life, and the persistence of inequality. Winchester's sociological culture reflects its commitment to social justice and to the practical relevance of social analysis. You will develop skills in social research, critical analysis, written argument, and the ability to apply sociological perspectives to contemporary social problems. These capabilities are genuinely transferable across a wide range of professional contexts. Graduates go on to work in research, policy, social work and related professions, public health, education, charities, journalism, human resources, marketing, and a wide range of roles in the public and voluntary sectors. The analytical and communicative skills sociology develops are valued by employers who want graduates who can think clearly about complex social realities. Postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, social research, or related fields is a common next step.
