BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the systematic study of how society works, why people behave the way they do, how institutions shape our lives, and what drives social change. It examines patterns of inequality, power, culture, identity, and social organisation, bringing both theoretical analysis and empirical research to bear on some of the most important questions of our time: how does class shape life chances? What are the social causes of crime? How do gender and race structure experience? How is society changing, and who benefits? At the University of the West of England, studying sociology is described as a thought-provoking, eye-opening, and life-changing experience, one that fundamentally alters how you see and understand the world around you. The programme is offered part-time, making it genuinely accessible to those managing work or other commitments alongside their studies. It includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, ensuring that academic sociological learning is complemented by professional and international experience. You will study sociological theory and research methods alongside substantive areas of sociology, including crime, culture, health, education, and the sociology of organisations. Graduates of sociology programmes pursue careers in social research, the civil service, policy, social work, journalism, education, NGOs, public health, housing, community development, and a broad range of roles in the commercial sector where understanding social dynamics and human behaviour is valued. The research skills, analytical thinking, and critical writing that sociology develops are highly transferable. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or social work.
