About this course
Sociology is the scientific study of human society: how it is organised, how it changes, how inequality is produced and reproduced, and how culture, institutions and social structures shape individual lives and collective experience. It asks some of the most fundamental questions about the world we live in, from why poverty persists in wealthy societies to how gender, race and class intersect to shape opportunities and outcomes, and how digital technologies are transforming social relationships and political life. At the University of Surrey, this three-year full-time programme prepares you both intellectually and professionally, integrating attention to digital skills and the tools that employers increasingly value alongside the theoretical and empirical depth of sociological training. You will engage with sociological theory from classical to contemporary, research methods including both quantitative and qualitative approaches, and substantive areas such as the sociology of work, health, education, media, migration and inequality. The programme takes seriously the question of how sociological knowledge can be applied to understanding and improving the world. You will develop strong skills in research design, data collection and analysis, critical argumentation and academic writing. The ability to evaluate evidence from complex social situations and communicate findings clearly is central to what the programme develops. These skills are genuinely transferable across a wide range of professional contexts. Graduates go into careers in social research, policy, public services, charities, human resources, journalism, education, marketing, the civil service and many other fields where understanding people and society is valuable. Some go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, public health, social work or related disciplines. The discipline's breadth and its rigorous approach to understanding social life make sociology graduates valuable across many sectors.
