BSc Sociology and Psychology
About this course
Sociology and psychology offer complementary accounts of human behaviour, and combining them produces a degree with more analytical range than either alone. Psychology examines the mind and behaviour from the inside: how perception, memory, emotion, reasoning and social influence operate at the level of the individual. Sociology examines the external structures, institutions, norms and inequalities that shape how people live, work and relate to each other at the collective level. Together they give you the tools to understand both the mental processes that drive individual action and the social conditions in which those processes unfold. At Swansea University you will study this three-year programme, developing scientific training in the relationship between mind, brain and behaviour alongside the theoretical foundation needed to understand people as social beings. You will cover the core areas of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, social and biological approaches, alongside sociological theory, research methods, and the analysis of social inequality, identity, and the institutions that structure social life. You will develop skills in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, preparing you to conduct independent research and to evaluate evidence critically across both disciplines. Graduates of sociology and psychology are well placed for careers across a wide range of human-centred sectors. Social research and policy analysis, market research, human resources and organisational development, social care and community support, public health, journalism, education, and the voluntary sector are all common destinations. With further postgraduate training, many graduates move into clinical, educational or forensic psychology, social work, counselling, or health psychology. Others pursue postgraduate research in psychology, sociology, or related social sciences, building on the methodological skills and theoretical breadth the undergraduate degree provides. The combination is particularly valued wherever understanding both individual behaviour and social context is important.
