BA Sociology and Media
About this course
Sociology and media studies together offer a powerful way of understanding the world we live in. Sociology examines the structures, institutions, and processes that organise social life, while media studies asks how those structures are represented, reinforced, and sometimes challenged through the texts and technologies we consume daily. Bringing the two together allows you to analyse not just what media says but what it does, how it shapes identity, distributes power, and frames the debates that define political and cultural life. At the University of Derby this three-year full-time programme draws on key concepts including political economy, representation, discourse, and identity to help you understand human behaviour through the overlapping lenses of media and society. You will engage with both qualitative and quantitative research methods, enabling you to analyse everything from news framing and social media algorithms to gender representation and the economics of the creative industries. The course includes a sandwich year, giving you a year of professional experience, alongside built-in work placement opportunities that connect academic learning to careers in media, communications, and beyond. This degree opens routes into journalism, public relations, communications, broadcasting, social research, policy, education, campaign work, and the charity sector. Many graduates also apply their analytical skills in digital marketing, content strategy, and media production. Others go on to postgraduate study in sociology, media, cultural studies, or related disciplines, developing specialist expertise in research or professional practice.
