BA Sociology
About this course
Sociology is the systematic study of how societies work: how they are structured, how institutions shape individual lives, how inequalities are produced and reproduced, and how social change happens. It asks questions that matter deeply for understanding the world we live in, including how race, class, gender, and other dimensions of social difference produce patterns of advantage and disadvantage, how media and digital technologies are reshaping social relations, and how institutions from families to states and global organisations organise and constrain human experience. This three-year, full-time programme at Anglia Ruskin introduces you to the work of classical and contemporary sociologists, giving you the theoretical frameworks and empirical methods needed to investigate social life rigorously. You will explore the forces that connect and divide individuals, groups, and institutions within societies, and engage with the way that sociology itself is changing in response to contemporary global issues including race, digital culture, environmental change, and global inequality. Research methods are central to the curriculum, developing your ability to collect, analyse, and interpret evidence about social phenomena. Sociology graduates are genuinely versatile, and the discipline's graduates are found across an exceptionally wide range of careers. Social research, public policy, local government, health and social care, education, the voluntary sector, human resources, journalism, and the civil service are all common destinations. The ability to analyse social patterns, understand diverse perspectives, and communicate clearly about complex issues is valuable wherever organisations engage with people and communities. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, social work, or related fields, pursuing specialist expertise for academic or professional careers.
