BASc Sociology and Global Sustainable Development
About this course
Sociology and global sustainable development is a combination that brings the analytical tools of social science to bear on some of the most urgent questions facing humanity. Sociology examines how societies are organised, how power and inequality are distributed, how identity is constructed through race, gender, ethnicity, and class, and how social change happens. Global sustainable development asks how human societies can meet their current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, addressing wealth inequality, resource use, food security, and the political economy of development. Together, as the University of Warwick describes it, the combination applies sociological concepts directly to global issues and uses a transdisciplinary approach that gives you freedom to research the topics that most interest you. Warwick's three-year full-time Sociology and Global Sustainable Development degree carries a typical entry tariff of 152 points and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placement opportunities. You will develop skills in social analysis, critical theory, research methods, and the application of sociological frameworks to real-world sustainability challenges, building the kind of evidence-based understanding of social problems that is needed to address them effectively. The work placement element gives you professional experience in a relevant policy, research, or development context before you graduate. Graduates work in international development organisations, NGOs, social research, government policy, environmental agencies, community development, journalism, and the public and voluntary sectors. The combination of sociological analysis and sustainability focus is increasingly valuable as organisations across sectors grapple with the social dimensions of environmental challenges. Postgraduate study in sociology, development studies, public policy, or sustainability is a well-established next step.
