About this course

Sociology, criminology, and criminal justice is a degree that combines the broad study of society with a focused examination of crime, deviance, and the institutions that respond to them. Sociology asks how social structures, inequalities, cultures, and institutions shape individual behaviour and collective life, developing a critical perspective on how societies are organised and why they change. Criminology examines crime as a social phenomenon, asking why certain acts and individuals are criminalised, how crime is distributed across society, and what drives offending behaviour. Criminal justice extends this into the study of policing, courts, prisons, and rehabilitation, examining how the state responds to crime and with what effects. At Bangor University, this programme integrates these three disciplines across a three-year degree, developing your ability to think critically about social problems and the formal and informal responses to them. You will examine theories of crime and deviance, the sociology of law and punishment, the experiences of victims and offenders, and the politics of criminal justice policy. The programme encourages you to bring sociological insight to criminal justice questions and vice versa, developing a richer understanding of both than either discipline would offer alone. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement. This combination of structured professional experience and international study offers significant scope to develop your skills in applied contexts, whether through placements with criminal justice agencies, social research organisations, or community and voluntary sector bodies, and to broaden your perspective through time spent studying abroad. Graduates move into careers in probation, social work, youth justice, policing, prison service, policy research, the voluntary sector, community development, and education. The analytical and communication skills developed through sociology and criminology are transferable across many public and private sector roles. Postgraduate study in criminology, social work, law, public policy, or sociology is a natural next step for those wishing to specialise or pursue research.
