BA Social Work
About this course
Social work is a profession rooted in values of social justice, human rights and the belief in the dignity and worth of every person. Social workers work with some of the most vulnerable members of society, including children and families in difficulty, older adults, people with disabilities, individuals experiencing mental health difficulties, and those caught in the criminal justice system. The work is complex, demanding and consequential, requiring practitioners who can think critically, communicate effectively, manage risk responsibly and advocate for people whose voices are not always heard. At Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a social worker in Scotland and across the UK. The degree is built around a commitment to promoting the rights of powerless people, protecting the vulnerable and disadvantaged, and addressing the causes and effects of social problems. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study social work and social welfare systems in a different national context, which enriches your professional understanding and broadens your perspective on how different societies organise support for their most vulnerable members. You will combine academic study of law, policy, social theory and research methods with substantial practice placements in statutory and voluntary sector settings, developing your professional skills alongside registered social workers. On graduating and achieving registration, you are qualified to practise in children's services, adult social care, mental health social work, criminal justice social work and the voluntary sector in Scotland and across the UK. Leadership, advanced practice, specialist and management roles are longer-term career options, and postgraduate study supports further professional development.
