HND Social Sciences
About this course
The social sciences encompass a cluster of disciplines, including sociology, politics, economics, psychology and anthropology, that share a commitment to understanding human behaviour and social organisation through systematic inquiry. Where the natural sciences study the physical world, the social sciences study the social world: the institutions people create, the inequalities they produce, the cultures they inhabit, and the collective decisions they make. A grounding in the social sciences develops your ability to ask rigorous questions about society, to gather and evaluate evidence, and to communicate your findings clearly. At the University of the Highlands and Islands this two-year full-time programme offers an introduction to the social sciences at the level of a Higher National Diploma or Certificate, providing a foundation in the core concepts and methods of the social science disciplines. The University of the Highlands and Islands operates across a network of colleges and learning centres that serves communities across Scotland's most geographically distinctive region, making degree-level and sub-degree education accessible to people who would struggle to attend a conventional campus university. You will engage with the key ideas and debates in social science, develop your skills in social research, and build the critical and analytical capacities that are fundamental to all social science disciplines. You will examine how social structures shape individual experience, how political systems are organised and contested, how economic forces distribute resources, and how cultural norms evolve and differ across communities. These perspectives are increasingly valued in a public and professional sphere that requires evidence-based thinking about social problems. This qualification provides a foundation for further study at degree level in social science disciplines including sociology, politics, economics, psychology or social work. Graduates can also move directly into entry-level roles in public services, community organisations, social care and related sectors. The two-year structure allows you to develop genuine academic foundations while remaining flexible about the direction in which your studies and career take you next.
