BA Social Care and Special Educational Needs
About this course
Social care and special educational needs are fields that place the wellbeing, rights and development of individuals, particularly those facing disadvantage, disability or vulnerability, at the centre of professional practice. Understanding the root causes of social inequality, the structures that shape care needs and the principles of inclusive education is essential for anyone who wants to work ethically and effectively in these intersecting sectors. As the landscape of social care and education continues to evolve, the need for creative, thoughtful and critically informed graduates grows. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of both social care and special educational needs, preparing you to work across the boundary between these fields. The programme includes a sandwich year, a work placement and a year abroad. The placement elements give you practical professional experience in care or educational settings, where you can apply your learning in real contexts and build the confidence and competence that employers value. The year abroad adds an international dimension, allowing you to examine how different countries organise care and support for vulnerable populations and how inclusive education is understood and practised in different cultural contexts. You will study the sociology of inequality, child development, disability studies, safeguarding, the legislative frameworks governing social care and special educational provision, and the principles of person-centred and inclusive practice. Communication, advocacy, multi-agency working and reflective professional practice are central to the curriculum. Graduates go into careers in social care, community support work, special educational needs coordination, family support services, youth work, disability services and educational settings. Some progress into postgraduate study, including teacher training, social work qualification or specialist practice in particular areas of care or education. The programme provides a foundation for roles that combine professional commitment with critical understanding of the systems in which care and education operate.
