BA Risk Management
About this course
Risk management is the systematic process of identifying, assessing, and responding to the uncertainties that organisations face in pursuing their objectives. Every institution, from a small business to a major bank to a government department, encounters risks: financial, operational, legal, reputational, and strategic. The ability to understand and manage those risks intelligently is central to how well-run organisations make decisions and protect themselves and the people who depend on them. Professional risk management has grown significantly as a discipline in recent decades, driven partly by regulatory requirements and partly by the increasing complexity of the environments in which organisations operate. At Glasgow Caledonian University, this four-year full-time Risk Management degree develops both the conceptual frameworks and the practical skills needed for a career in professional risk management. You will study the nature of risk across different contexts, including financial risk, operational risk, legal and compliance risk, and reputational risk, alongside the tools and techniques used to quantify, monitor, and mitigate it. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you substantial professional experience in risk management settings before you complete your degree. This applied dimension is particularly important in a field where employers value graduates who can move quickly into professional practice. Graduates from risk management programmes are well positioned for careers in insurance, financial services, management consultancy, the legal profession, corporate governance, the public sector, and the health and safety field. Professional qualifications from bodies such as the Institute of Risk Management complement the degree and are pursued by many graduates as part of their professional development. The skills developed through the programme, including analytical reasoning, legal and regulatory awareness, and the ability to communicate risk to non-specialist audiences, are applicable across a wide range of industries and organisational contexts.
