BEng Renewable Energy Engineering
About this course
Renewable energy engineering is one of the most consequential engineering disciplines of our time, concerned with designing, developing, and deploying the systems that capture energy from wind, sun, water, and other sustainable sources. As the global energy system transitions away from fossil fuels, the demand for engineers with expertise in renewable technologies, from wind turbines and solar photovoltaic systems to tidal energy and hydrogen production, has grown dramatically. This is a field where engineering skill directly shapes the future of the planet. At Southampton Solent University, this programme places you at the forefront of energy technology, applying engineering skills to develop efficient uses of valuable global resources. The degree includes a foundation year, providing a structured academic preparation for students entering the degree before the main programme begins. You will study the principles of electrical and mechanical engineering as they apply to renewable energy systems, covering areas such as power systems, energy conversion, wind and solar technology, and sustainable design. The full programme runs over four years full-time including the foundation year, and three years for the main degree. Graduates of renewable energy engineering programmes work in the renewable energy sector in roles including design engineer, project engineer, energy systems analyst, site engineer, and consultant. They work with wind farm developers, solar energy companies, offshore energy operators, grid management organisations, and government bodies overseeing the energy transition. The engineering skills the degree develops are also transferable to other areas of engineering and energy management. Many graduates pursue professional engineering registration or postgraduate study in energy engineering or sustainable technology.
