BA Religion and Asian and Middle Eastern studies
About this course
Religion and Asian and Middle Eastern studies is one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary fields available in higher education. It asks students to engage with some of the world's most significant intellectual and spiritual traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism, through the combined lenses of history, philosophy, literary criticism, and linguistics. Understanding these traditions requires more than broad knowledge; it requires the ability to read texts carefully in their original contexts, to analyse philosophical arguments with rigour, and to situate religious ideas within the social and historical forces that shaped them. At the University of Oxford, this three-year full-time programme develops exactly that range of skills. You will engage with primary sources in their original languages and in translation, with critical and theoretical debates in religious studies and related disciplines, and with the specific intellectual traditions of Asia and the Middle East. The Oxford tutorial system places close reading and sustained argument at the heart of your education, and you will develop the capacity to move between disciplines with confidence, combining the historian's attention to context with the philosopher's precision and the literary critic's sensitivity to language and form. The analytical and critical abilities developed through this programme are applicable across a wide range of professional contexts where rigorous thinking, cultural understanding, and the ability to engage with complex material are valued. Graduates go on to careers in academia, journalism, diplomacy, the civil service, law, international organisations, NGOs, publishing, and education. The ability to understand how religious belief and cultural tradition shape human behaviour is of increasing relevance in an interconnected world. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in religious studies, Islamic studies, South Asian studies, philosophy, or related fields.
