BSc Psychology with Neuroscience
About this course
Psychology with neuroscience is a combination that enriches the study of mind and behaviour with a deeper understanding of the biological structures and processes that underlie them. Psychology develops your ability to think scientifically about perception, memory, emotion, development, social interaction, and individual differences, using the full range of experimental and observational methods that define the discipline. Neuroscience adds the biological dimension, asking how the brain and nervous system produce the psychological phenomena that psychology investigates, from the firing of individual neurons to the large-scale neural networks associated with consciousness, language, and emotion. At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, which means it confers Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, the gateway to postgraduate professional training in psychology. You will explore psychological theory across the core areas required for BPS accreditation alongside neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, and the neuroscience of mental health conditions. Laboratory and practical work develop your research skills and your ability to design and evaluate empirical studies. The programme includes a foundation year, which provides a supported entry route for students who need to build their scientific foundations, and a sandwich year with work placement, giving you professional experience in psychological or neuroscience-related settings. Graduates from psychology with neuroscience programmes go on to further study and careers in clinical psychology, mental health services, neuroscience research, cognitive rehabilitation, and healthcare, as well as in human resources, market research, education, and the civil service. Most routes into practitioner psychology require postgraduate training, and BPS accreditation makes this programme an excellent foundation for that progression. Further study options include doctoral training in clinical, counselling, forensic, and educational psychology, as well as research degrees in neuroscience.
