Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour, examining how human beings perceive, think, feel, remember, and act in both individual and social contexts. It draws on neuroscience, biology, sociology, and philosophy to address questions ranging from the neural mechanisms of perception and memory to the social forces that shape attitudes, prejudice, and relationships. As a science, it demands rigour in research design, data collection, and statistical analysis, and as an applied field it connects directly to the most pressing questions about mental health, education, work, and human wellbeing. At the University of Plymouth, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, which provides the academic preparation needed for students who are strongly motivated but may not have the most conventional prior qualifications. The foundation year introduces the major theoretical traditions of psychology, including psychodynamic, behaviourist, cognitive, humanistic, and systemic approaches, building the conceptual vocabulary needed for deeper engagement with the discipline. Across the main degree you will develop knowledge of the full range of psychological domains required for BPS accreditation, alongside strong research methods and statistical skills. A sandwich year with work placement gives you direct professional experience, and the option of a year abroad allows you to study psychology in a different cultural and academic context, broadening your perspective on how psychological knowledge varies across societies. Graduates with BPS-accredited degrees hold the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership, which is the requirement for progression to postgraduate professional training in areas such as clinical psychology, counselling psychology, educational psychology, forensic psychology, or occupational psychology. Many graduates also enter careers directly in research, human resources, market research, social research, health promotion, user experience, education, and the public sector, where the analytical and communication skills of psychology are widely valued. The placement year experience is a significant advantage at the point of entering the graduate job market.
