BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology at the University of Manchester offers a research-informed and intellectually demanding education in one of the most wide-ranging of the sciences. From the molecular basis of memory to the social dynamics of prejudice and discrimination, from the development of language in infancy to the clinical understanding of anxiety and psychosis, psychology encompasses questions of profound importance to human life and applies the methods of empirical science to answering them. Manchester is a research-intensive institution, and the psychology programme benefits directly from a faculty engaged in internationally significant research. This three-year full-time programme covers the full range of psychological science, including cognitive, social, developmental, biological, and clinical psychology, alongside the research methods and statistical training that are central to the discipline. A sandwich year and year abroad are available, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a professional environment and to study psychology in a different national context before completing your final year. Work placements are embedded in the programme, providing experience of how psychological knowledge is applied outside the academic setting. You will develop strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, the ability to evaluate evidence critically, and the capacity to communicate scientific ideas clearly. Manchester's location in a major city provides access to diverse research populations and professional settings that enrich the practical dimensions of psychological study. The BPS-accredited nature of the degree provides the recognised basis for graduate study and professional training in psychology. Graduates pursue careers in mental health support, human resources, marketing, education, research, the civil service, and healthcare. Many go on to postgraduate professional training in clinical, counselling, educational, or occupational psychology, or to doctoral research. The combination of rigorous scientific training, sandwich year, and year abroad makes Manchester graduates well equipped for a range of demanding professional and academic paths.
