BSc Psychology
About this course
Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processes, exploring how people think, feel, perceive, remember, learn and develop across the lifespan. It sits at the intersection of biology, the social sciences and philosophy, asking questions about individual experience and social behaviour that matter both for understanding the human condition and for addressing practical challenges in health, education, work and public life. The breadth of the discipline is one of its strengths: psychology touches on everything from neuroscience and cognitive processes to social influence and clinical practice. At Southampton Solent University the programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society, which is the first step towards graduate basis for chartered membership and eventual chartered psychologist status. The degree emphasises practical application throughout, with real-world assessments integrated across the programme to ensure that what you learn connects to professional contexts and challenges. The course includes a foundation year, which gives you a solid scientific and analytical grounding before the main degree begins, and a range of optional modules allows you to tailor the degree towards the career direction that interests you most. The programme runs full time. Psychology graduates enter careers in an exceptionally wide range of fields. Clinical, counselling, educational, occupational and forensic psychology are all routes that postgraduate study and qualification can open, while others move into roles in human resources, marketing, research, social work, healthcare, education, the criminal justice system and the public sector. The analytical, research and communication skills that psychology develops are valued across virtually every industry, making psychology graduates among the most versatile in the job market.
