BSc Psychology of Esports
About this course
The psychology of esports is an emerging and genuinely distinctive field that applies the scientific study of mind and behaviour to competitive gaming and the broader world of esports. Esports has grown rapidly into a substantial global industry, with professional competitions, large prize pools, dedicated training facilities and millions of spectators. The psychological demands on esports athletes, including sustained attention, rapid decision-making under pressure, emotion regulation, team communication and resilience to setbacks, are real and increasingly well-researched, making this a field with both academic depth and applied relevance. The University of Chichester offers this three-year full-time degree, grounding you in the core areas of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, social, biological and sport and exercise psychology, while also developing the specialist knowledge of esports performance, training, wellbeing and culture that makes the degree distinctive. You will examine how cognitive processes such as attention, memory and decision speed underpin elite gameplay, how psychological skills training can be applied to esport performance in ways analogous to their use in traditional sport, and how the social and cultural dimensions of esports communities shape player experience. The programme draws on established sport and exercise psychology while also engaging with the novel features of competitive gaming as a domain. The degree develops strong scientific literacy, the ability to evaluate psychological evidence critically and the practical skills to apply psychological frameworks in applied settings. Chichester's tradition in sport and exercise science supports the applied dimension of the curriculum. Graduates are well placed for roles as esports coaches, performance psychologists, player wellbeing staff, esports analysts and managers, as well as for broader careers in sport psychology, coaching science, human factors, user experience research and the gaming industry. Postgraduate study in sport and exercise psychology or clinical psychology is a natural option for those wishing to pursue regulated psychological practice.
