BA Psychology in Education
About this course
Psychology in education is a discipline that applies the theories, research, and methods of psychology to the understanding of learning, development, and the educational experience of children and young people. It draws on cognitive, social, developmental, and clinical psychology to examine how children learn, what helps and hinders their progress, and how educational environments can be designed to support the wellbeing and attainment of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. As schools increasingly attend to the psychological dimensions of the learning environment, professionals who understand how psychology shapes the student experience are in growing demand. At Leeds Beckett University, you will study psychology in education over three years full-time, developing your understanding of developmental psychology, learning theory, educational psychology, child and adolescent wellbeing, and the support structures that schools and educational systems can provide. The programme pays particular attention to SEND provision, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children who face particular challenges in educational settings. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and encounter different educational and psychological traditions. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates work in educational psychology support roles, teaching assistant and learning support positions, SEND coordination, school counselling and wellbeing, early years settings, and social and community education. The degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate training in educational psychology or clinical psychology, and many graduates continue to train at masters level to become chartered educational psychologists. Others work in children's services, youth work, family support, and the broader children's workforce.
