BA Prosthetics and Special Effects Design
About this course
Prosthetics and special effects design is a creative practice that combines artistic skill, technical knowledge and an understanding of materials to create realistic prosthetic makeups, creature effects, animatronics and physical special effects for stage, screen and themed environments. From ageing an actor with detailed latex and silicone prosthetics to building a terrifying monster or a severed limb for a horror production, practitioners in this field bring imagination to life through craft, and the results of their work are often among the most memorable elements of a theatrical or cinematic experience. At Southampton Solent University this programme, which includes a foundation year, develops your creative and technical skills through hands-on studio practice guided by experienced industry professionals. You will learn the design and sculpture skills needed to develop original characters, the materials knowledge to work with silicone, latex and foam latex, the painting and finishing techniques that make prosthetics convincing under camera or stage lighting, and the production workflows that professional special effects work involves. Building a strong portfolio throughout the programme is central, as the screen and theatre industries hire primarily on the basis of demonstrated creative work. The foundation year supports your entry into this specialist practice. Graduates work in the film and television industry on productions ranging from low-budget independents to major studio productions, in theatre companies, in themed entertainment and visitor attractions, in horror events and immersive experiences, and in educational and heritage contexts where realistic replicas are needed. Some graduates establish their own studios or work as freelancers, building a reputation through the quality and range of their portfolio. The practical and creative skills developed through this degree also transfer into adjacent areas such as medical prosthetics manufacture, heritage reconstruction, and sculpture and prop-making for commercial and cultural clients.
