BA Professional Policing with Foundation Year
About this course
Professional policing is a degree designed for those who want to pursue a career in the police service with the academic and professional preparation that modern policing increasingly demands. Policing has changed substantially in recent decades, with a growing emphasis on evidence-based practice, community engagement, safeguarding, digital investigation and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern police conduct. A degree-level route into the profession reflects this shift, producing officers who can think critically, communicate effectively, manage complex situations and uphold rights and dignity in fast-moving operational environments. At York St John University this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a structured and supported entry into the degree for those who would benefit from additional preparation before the main content begins. The programme provides the pre-join qualification aligned with the Police Education Qualification Framework in England and Wales, the academic credential you need when applying for a Police Officer role. You will study criminal law, human rights, safeguarding, diversity and inclusion, evidence-based policing, ethics and the social and political contexts of law enforcement, alongside the personal and professional development that the role demands. The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placements, giving you direct experience in operational and professional settings throughout your studies. Graduates are well positioned to apply for police constable roles in England and Wales, with the degree satisfying the educational requirements of the Police Education Qualification Framework. Over a policing career, routes open up into detective work, specialist investigation, public protection, counter-terrorism, cybercrime and senior leadership. Some graduates also move into related public sector roles in criminal justice, probation, border force, intelligence and community safety, or continue to postgraduate study in criminology, law or public administration.
