BA Professional Policing
About this course
Professional policing is a degree designed to prepare students for one of the most challenging and publicly important careers in society. Policing sits at the intersection of law, social work, psychology, and public service, requiring officers who can understand and apply complex legal frameworks, engage effectively with diverse communities, manage risk and conflict, and exercise sound professional judgment in situations that are often unpredictable and high-pressure. In England and Wales, the increasing professionalisation of policing through degree-level entry makes a dedicated policing qualification increasingly valuable. At the University of Derby, this three-year full-time programme provides in-depth preparation for a career in the police service. You will develop a thorough understanding of the role of a police officer today, including the criminal justice systems and the powers and laws that govern police activity across England and Wales. The programme engages seriously with the social, ethical, and operational dimensions of modern policing, including community relations, the use of force, diversity and inclusion, mental health awareness, and the challenges of working in a demanding public service role. A foundation year is available for students who need additional academic preparation, and the programme includes a year abroad option. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates of professional policing degrees are well prepared to apply for police constable roles in any of the forces in England and Wales, where degree-level qualification is increasingly the standard for entry. The degree also provides a strong foundation for careers in related fields, including probation, border force, the National Crime Agency, prison service, and community safety roles. Many graduates pursue specialist roles within the police, from detective work and serious crime investigation to public protection and neighbourhood policing, as their careers develop.
