BA Professional Education (Primary) with specialism in Modern Language
About this course
Primary education teaching, with a specialism in modern languages, prepares you to become a teacher in Scottish primary schools with a particular expertise in languages that can enrich children's linguistic experience from the early years. Teaching in the primary phase is one of the most demanding and rewarding professional roles available: it requires deep subject knowledge across multiple curriculum areas, a sophisticated understanding of child development, the ability to design and deliver engaging learning experiences, and the interpersonal skills to build trusting relationships with young children and their families. A modern language specialism adds a further dimension, equipping you to help children develop linguistic awareness and the beginnings of proficiency in another language at an age when the potential for language learning is greatest. At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time degree is a professional teacher education programme that leads to registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. You will spend extensive time in primary school classrooms throughout the degree, developing your teaching skills under experienced supervision and building the practical confidence that the profession requires. The modern language specialism develops your own language proficiency alongside pedagogical knowledge specific to teaching languages to young children. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to develop both your language skills and your international perspective through study or professional experience in another country. You will develop thorough knowledge of the primary curriculum, assessment practice, inclusive education, and the professional responsibilities of teaching in Scotland. Graduates register with the GTC Scotland and take up posts as primary school teachers, progressing through probationary teaching to full registration. Career development pathways include subject leadership, curriculum co-ordination, promoted positions, educational management, and roles in education advisory services. Postgraduate study and professional development are ongoing features of a teaching career.
