BA Product Innovation
About this course
Product Innovation is a design discipline concerned with conceiving, developing and bringing to market products, systems and experiences that better serve the needs of users and society. It sits at the intersection of design thinking, engineering, business strategy and user research, asking not only what a product should do but how it should work in the hands of real people, how it can be manufactured sustainably, and how it will create value in a competitive market. The ability to take an idea from conception through prototyping and testing to a refined, manufacturable outcome is one of the most transferable and commercially valuable skills in the creative and manufacturing sectors. At the University of Huddersfield, this four-year full-time programme is structured around the full design journey, from idea generation and research through prototyping, testing and refinement to a finished output. You will work across a range of design disciplines, developing visual, technical and strategic thinking in parallel, and engaging with the materials, manufacturing processes and digital tools that contemporary product development relies on. Huddersfield's strong connections to industry, particularly in the manufacturing and creative sectors of Yorkshire and beyond, inform the curriculum and provide opportunities for real-world project engagement. Graduates of Product Innovation programmes work as product designers, industrial designers, innovation consultants, UX and product strategists, and design managers across manufacturing, consumer goods, technology, healthcare, and the creative industries. Many also work in design agencies, startups, and in-house design teams within large organisations. The combination of creative and analytical skills the degree develops is valued across any sector where new products and services are being conceived and brought to market. Postgraduate study in product design, innovation management, or business is available for those who want to specialise further or move into leadership.
