About this course

Product design is concerned with how everyday things are conceived, developed, and brought into the world. It asks not only how objects should function but how they should feel to use, what materials and processes suit them, how they can be made sustainably and ethically, and what role they play in the lives of the people who encounter them. At degree level, product design develops both the creative and technical capabilities needed to generate ideas and bring them to realisation, alongside the critical thinking to interrogate design choices and their consequences for people and the planet. At Leeds Beckett this part-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you a rich combination of professional and international experience during your studies. The programme is hands-on in its orientation, taking you from sketchbook concepts through to full-scale prototypes and finished outcomes across a range of product types, whether furniture, consumer products, spatial interventions, or sustainable systems. You will develop creative, technical, and professional skills while being encouraged to think boldly, question convention, and develop a distinct design identity. The year abroad adds an international perspective that enriches your creative practice and expands your understanding of how design operates across different cultural and industrial contexts. Product design graduates find careers across the design and manufacturing sectors. Industrial design, consumer electronics, furniture design, sustainable product development, packaging, medical device design, and user experience design are among the most direct career paths. Many graduates work in design consultancies, manufacturers, or in-house design teams at technology and consumer goods companies. The portfolio of work built during the programme is central to career entry in design, and the professional experience from the sandwich year and placement strengthens that portfolio with evidence of real-world design thinking. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in design or related fields, or develop independent design practices.
