BA Primary Education With Qts
About this course
Primary education with Qualified Teacher Status is a degree that prepares you to teach children aged five to eleven, developing the subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, professional understanding and classroom confidence needed to inspire young learners and make a lasting difference to their education. Primary teachers shape children's relationship with learning at its most formative stage, introducing them to literacy, mathematics, science and the wider curriculum and helping them develop the curiosity, resilience and love of learning that will serve them throughout their lives. It is demanding and rewarding work. At Edge Hill University, this three-year qualifying programme allows you to build your teaching experience with children aged five to eleven while choosing a focused subject specialism to develop alongside the broad curriculum knowledge that primary teaching requires. You will study child development, curriculum theory and design, inclusive education, assessment and the major subjects of the primary curriculum, including English, mathematics, science, humanities and the arts. Placement experience in schools is central to the programme and is substantial: you will spend significant time in real classrooms, planning and teaching lessons, receiving professional mentoring and developing the practical judgement and resilience that effective teaching demands. Edge Hill has a strong reputation for teacher education, and the programme is designed to meet the standards required for recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status at the end of the degree, enabling you to enter the profession directly on graduation. Graduates enter teaching as newly qualified primary teachers in state and independent schools, where progression to senior teacher, subject leader, assistant headteacher and beyond is the normal career trajectory. Further study in education leadership or a specialist curriculum area is common for those seeking senior roles. Some graduates also move into special educational needs, educational psychology or teacher education.
