About this course

Portuguese and theatre studies is a combination that connects one of the world's most widely spoken languages with one of the most collaborative and physically immediate of the performing arts. Portuguese is the official language of nine countries across Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia, carrying literary and cultural traditions of extraordinary richness and diversity, from Pessoa and Saramago to the theatre traditions of Brazil and Portugal. Theatre studies examines performance as a cultural practice and an artistic form, developing both critical understanding and creative production skills. At Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme develops your Portuguese language proficiency alongside your understanding of theatre as theory and practice. The theatre strand benefits from Glasgow's close connections with the industry, giving you opportunities to learn from and engage with practitioners of national and international standing. You will develop skills in performance analysis, theatrical history, and devising, alongside your linguistic and cultural knowledge of the Portuguese-speaking world. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, building professional experience within the degree. Graduates of Portuguese and theatre studies programmes pursue careers in the performing arts, both in production and performance roles and in arts management and education. The Portuguese language opens additional pathways in translation, international arts development, cultural diplomacy, and business in Portuguese-speaking markets. Many graduates develop portfolio careers that combine theatre practice with language teaching, translation, or community arts work. Others go on to postgraduate study in theatre, performance, or Portuguese and Brazilian studies.
