Politics is one of the most pressing of all academic subjects, concerned with the forces that shape how societies are governed, how power is exercised and contested, and how collective decisions are made. It encompasses political theory, comparative politics, international relations, and public policy, and it asks questions about democracy, justice, rights, and the global order that have rarely seemed more urgent. The ability to analyse political events, evaluate evidence, and understand the structures within which political life occurs is valuable in a wide range of careers. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year programme with a year abroad allows you to combine rigorous academic analysis with hands-on experience to understand how political decisions affect everything from local communities to global climate action. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study politics in a different national context, deepening your comparative understanding and broadening your perspective on how different societies approach the same political challenges. You will study political theory, UK and comparative politics, and international relations, developing both the analytical tools and the factual knowledge needed to engage seriously with political questions. The typical entry tariff is 120 points. Graduates of politics programmes pursue careers in the civil service, local government, political parties and think tanks, journalism, the voluntary sector, international organisations, public affairs consultancy, law, and education. The analytical and communication skills that politics develops are valued across many professional contexts, and the year abroad experience is particularly valued in roles with international or comparative dimensions. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in politics, international relations, law, or public policy.
