MA Politics/ Spanish
About this course
Politics and Spanish is a combination with both intellectual coherence and practical power. Spain and Latin America are home to a rich and varied set of political traditions, from parliamentary democracy and regional nationalism in Europe to revolutionary movements, authoritarian regimes, and vibrant democratic transitions across the Americas. Studying Spanish politics and political culture through the language itself, rather than in translation, gives you access to debates, texts, and perspectives that are invisible in English-language political science alone. Meanwhile, the analytical tools of political science help you understand the structural forces shaping political life across the Spanish-speaking world. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year, full-time degree develops both disciplines to a high level. You will study comparative politics, political theory, British and international politics, and specialist topics in the politics of the Spanish-speaking world, alongside language study that takes you from your current level to a high degree of fluency and cultural competence. Glasgow's Spanish staff cover a wide range of topics and include native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, reflecting the diversity and range of the language and its communities. A sandwich year and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience alongside your academic development. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the demanding nature of a dual-discipline degree at a leading research university. Graduates of politics and Spanish work in diplomacy, the foreign civil service, international organisations, journalism, NGOs, international business, and the many private and public sector roles where Spanish-language ability and political analysis are both valued. Many also go on to postgraduate study in political science, international relations, Latin American studies, or Spanish and Latin American studies, developing deeper specialist expertise.
