BA Politics
About this course
Politics is the study of power: how it is organised, contested, and exercised within societies and between states. It asks why governments make the choices they do, how political ideas shape public life, what explains patterns of inequality and social change, and how democratic systems can be made to work better or can fail. It is a subject that demands both analytical rigour and genuine engagement with the world, because the questions it addresses are not abstract: they determine how lives are lived and what futures are possible. At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time programme focuses on the dynamic power relations between individuals, social groups, and nations, developing your ability to understand current events through the analytical frameworks of political science and political theory. You will study comparative politics, political philosophy, international relations, political economy, and the politics of specific issues and regions, building a broad command of the discipline alongside the research and writing skills that political analysis requires. A sandwich year places you in a professional environment for a sustained period, and work placement experience is integrated throughout, giving you direct experience of how political, governmental, and related organisations function in practice. Politics graduates go on to careers in the civil service, parliament, local government, journalism, policy research, think tanks, international organisations, the charity sector, and political parties. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are valued across many professions, and the sandwich year and placements often lead directly to employment opportunities. Postgraduate study in politics, public policy, international relations, and law is a common next step for those who wish to specialise or pursue research.
