BA Politics
About this course
Politics is the study of how communities govern themselves, how power is distributed and contested, and how collective decisions are made in the face of disagreement and competing interests. It is a discipline with direct and immediate relevance to everyday life: from climate policy and migration to human rights, democratic legitimacy, and the management of economic inequality, the questions politics examines shape the conditions in which everyone lives. This three-year full-time degree at Leeds Beckett University includes a year abroad, and it aims to develop students who can think critically about the forces shaping contemporary societies. You will explore ideas, power struggles, and political movements influencing societies around the world, developing the analytical and critical skills to question assumptions, challenge dominant narratives, and engage seriously with some of the most pressing and divisive issues of the day. The programme covers topics including inequality, populism, global justice, environmental change, political extremism, and the future of democracy, drawing on theoretical frameworks from political science alongside empirical engagement with contemporary events. Interactive learning, live projects, and industry exposure make the degree practically as well as intellectually engaging. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects a broadly accessible admissions standard. Graduates from politics programmes at Leeds Beckett pursue careers in government and public administration, the civil service, journalism, policy research, think tanks, political communications, non-governmental organisations, international organisations, and a wide range of other roles where the ability to understand and interpret political processes is valued. Many continue to postgraduate study in politics, international relations, public policy, or related fields.
