BA Politics
About this course
Politics is the study of power, how it is organised, exercised, contested, and justified in human societies. It examines constitutions and electoral systems, parties and ideologies, public policy and international relations, and the deeper theoretical questions about what legitimate authority means and what societies owe to their members. In a world of rapidly changing political landscapes, deepening inequality, and contested democratic norms, the skills that a politics degree develops, the ability to analyse power, evaluate evidence, construct arguments, and think critically about competing claims, are more valuable than ever. At Bangor University, this three-year, full-time degree includes a foundation year for those who need to build their academic foundations before the main programme, as well as a sandwich placement year, the possibility of a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. That combination of structural features gives you considerable flexibility and professional experience alongside your academic studies. The programme develops your understanding of political theory and political science across British, European, and comparative contexts, preparing you to engage analytically with the political world rather than just to observe it. Graduates in politics go on to careers in the civil service, local and national government, political parties, think tanks, journalism, public affairs, NGOs, international development, and the private sector. The research, writing, and analytical skills the degree develops are valued across many professions where clear thinking about complex situations is required. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in political science, international relations, public policy, or law, building the specialist expertise needed for research or senior professional careers.
