BSc Politics and Sociology
About this course
Politics and sociology is a combination that brings together two of the most essential frameworks for understanding how human societies are organised and how power operates within them. Politics examines who has political power, how they acquired it, and in whose interest they exercise it, investigating the institutions of government, the dynamics of political behaviour, and the competing ideologies that shape public life. Sociology examines the broader social structures, from class and race to gender and culture, that underpin political life and that shape the experiences of individuals and communities within it. Together, the two disciplines provide a comprehensive and critical account of contemporary society. At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time programme offers a dynamic combination of high-level study in both subjects, developing your ability to address the critical questions that both disciplines raise about power, inequality, and social change. You will study political theory, comparative politics, and international relations alongside sociological perspectives on social structure, identity, culture, and social movements. The programme develops your capacity for rigorous social scientific analysis, your ability to engage with quantitative and qualitative evidence, and your facility for clear and persuasive argument about complex social and political questions. Politics and sociology graduates are found across a wide range of careers that value critical social scientific thinking. The civil service, local government, journalism, the third sector, policy analysis, social research, human resources, teaching, international organisations, and political campaigns are among the most common destinations. The combination is particularly well suited to roles that require both understanding of political processes and sensitivity to the social dynamics that shape them, including policy development, community development, public affairs, and advocacy. Postgraduate study in politics, sociology, social policy, international relations, or criminology is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise or pursue academic research.
