BA Politics and Psychology
About this course
Politics and psychology are disciplines that illuminate one another in striking ways. Politics examines the structures, institutions, and processes through which power is distributed and exercised, asking how governments, parties, and citizens interact and why political outcomes take the forms they do. Psychology investigates human behaviour, thought, and motivation at the individual and group level. Brought together, they allow you to explore questions about political behaviour, the psychology of leadership and influence, public opinion, decision-making under uncertainty, and the human dimensions of conflict and cooperation, questions that neither discipline can fully address on its own. At the University of Stirling, this four-year, full-time joint degree gives you a rigorous grounding in both fields, developing your quantitative and qualitative research skills alongside your knowledge of political theory, comparative politics, social psychology, cognitive science, and research methods. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international institution and to experience political and social contexts that broaden your analytical perspective. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the academic standard of the programme. The combination of social scientific analysis and psychological understanding that this degree provides is valued across a wide range of careers. Graduates work in government and public policy, market and opinion research, communications, journalism, public services, the charity sector, organisational behaviour, and human resources. Those interested in applied psychology may pursue postgraduate conversion courses towards clinical, educational, or occupational psychology. Postgraduate study in politics, international relations, social psychology, or public policy is also a common next step, and the research methods training in this programme provides a strong foundation for further academic work.
