About this course

Podiatry is the healthcare profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and lower limb. Podiatrists work with patients across the full range of life, from children with developmental gait problems to older adults managing the complications of diabetes, rheumatological disease, and vascular conditions. The profession encompasses both everyday clinical care, including nail and skin management, and complex specialist work including biomechanical assessment, orthotics, and surgical interventions. It demands clinical knowledge, practical skill, and the interpersonal sensitivity that direct patient care always requires. At the University of Salford this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of foot and lower limb disorders in the context of general health and wellbeing, recognising that many conditions affecting the lower limb are expressions of systemic disease. You will learn comprehensive assessment and diagnostic skills, and develop patient care pathways for conditions that significantly affect quality of life. Clinical practice is central to the programme, with placements in a range of settings that allow you to develop professional competence under supervision and to engage with the full diversity of patients that podiatry serves. Qualifying as a podiatrist makes you eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is required to practise as an independent healthcare professional. Podiatry graduates work in the NHS, in private practice, in care homes, in sport and exercise medicine, and in specialist services for people with diabetes and other long-term conditions. The profession offers clear pathways for specialisation and career development, including advanced clinical roles, podiatric surgery, and leadership. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study to develop specialist clinical or research expertise within the profession.
