Plants make life on Earth possible. Through photosynthesis they capture the sun's energy and fix it into the biological matter that underpins virtually every food chain on the planet. They shape climates, filter water, hold soils in place, and provide the raw material for medicines, fibres, fuels, and countless other products. Plant science is therefore not a niche specialism but a discipline at the centre of some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity, from food security and climate change to biodiversity loss and the development of sustainable agriculture. At the University of Bristol, this four-year full-time degree takes you from the molecular level to the ecosystem, exploring the full range of plant biology with rigour and depth. You will gain knowledge of the diversity, evolution, and function of plants, engaging with cutting-edge areas including functional genomics and bioinformatics, plant developmental biology, plant pathology and parasite biology, cell signalling, pollination biology, ecology, plant conservation, and systems biology. This breadth ensures you develop both detailed mechanistic understanding and the wider ecological perspective needed to connect laboratory findings to the real world. You will build quantitative and analytical skills alongside your biological knowledge, working with data and experimental methods that are central to modern plant research. Bristol's strong research environment means you will study in a department actively contributing to scientific knowledge in this field, with access to glasshouses, field sites, and laboratory facilities that support hands-on learning. Graduates of plant sciences go on to careers in academic research, agricultural science, plant breeding, conservation, environmental consultancy, the food industry, and the biotechnology sector.
