BSc Plant Science
About this course
Plant science is the study of plants as living systems, examining how they grow, reproduce, photosynthesise, respond to their environment and interact with other organisms. Plants are foundational to life on Earth, producing the oxygen we breathe, forming the base of almost every terrestrial food chain, regulating water and carbon cycles, and providing the raw materials for food, fibre, fuel and medicine. Understanding how plants work, how they respond to stress, disease and climate, and how they can be improved or conserved is central to addressing the most urgent challenges of the coming decades. At Edge Hill University this part-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you a combination of professional experience and international exposure that enriches your academic study and strengthens your career prospects. Part-time study makes the programme accessible alongside work, family or other commitments, which may be particularly appropriate for people already working in horticulture, agriculture, conservation or a related field. You will study plant physiology, genetics, ecology, taxonomy and the molecular biology of plant systems, developing both theoretical knowledge and the practical skills of field and laboratory investigation. Plant science graduates go on to careers in agriculture, horticulture, botanical research, conservation, food science, environmental consultancy, the seed and agrochemical industries, and plant biotechnology. The growing importance of food security, sustainable agriculture, carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation has made plant scientists more in demand than at any previous point. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in plant science, ecology, agriculture or biotechnology. The part-time structure with sandwich and international elements is a practical and well-supported pathway for people who want to build a career in this increasingly important field while managing existing commitments.
