Physics and philosophy address the deepest questions about the nature of reality from two different but complementary directions. Physics does so through experiment and mathematical theory, building precise and predictive accounts of how matter, energy, space, and time behave. Philosophy does so through conceptual analysis and argument, asking what the results of physics mean, what the limits of scientific explanation are, and how knowledge of the physical world relates to our experience of it. At the University of York, the BSc Physics with Philosophy runs over four years of full-time study and includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you both theoretical depth and professional experience. The physics component gives you a rigorous grounding in classical and modern physics: mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, and the physics of the cosmos. The philosophy component engages with questions directly prompted by physics and broader philosophical concerns.
