About this course

Physics with philosophy is a degree that holds together two of the oldest and most searching intellectual traditions: the empirical investigation of the physical world and the philosophical questioning of what that investigation means. Physics asks how matter, energy, space, and time behave, using experiment, mathematical modelling, and theoretical reasoning to build increasingly accurate and comprehensive accounts of nature. Philosophy asks what those accounts actually mean: what is it to understand the world, what counts as a good explanation, what is the relationship between mathematical models and physical reality, and what are the implications of quantum mechanics and relativity for our deepest assumptions about causation, determinism, and the nature of reality itself. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year, full-time degree develops a thoughtful balance between the foundational principles of physics and their application across other areas of science. You will study core physics content, including mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, and relativity, alongside philosophical content covering the philosophy of science, metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of physics itself. The combination enriches both: philosophy becomes more grounded when you understand what contemporary physics actually claims, and physics becomes more reflective when you are trained to ask what those claims actually mean. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study in another country and experience physics and philosophy from a different institutional perspective. Graduates from this combination are genuinely versatile. The physical sciences training opens careers in research, technology, engineering, finance, and data science. The philosophical dimension adds depth in reasoning, argumentation, and the critical evaluation of evidence that makes graduates distinctive in any role requiring careful analytical thinking. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in physics, philosophy of science, or related fields, pursuing research in areas where the two disciplines continue to illuminate each other.
