Physics is the discipline that investigates the fundamental laws governing matter, energy, and the forces that bind the universe together. At Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year at the start, which provides a thorough, skills-building introduction to the science you need to begin the BSc with confidence. This makes the programme accessible to students who have the aptitude and motivation for physics but may not have the specific A-level profile that direct entry requires. The main degree then covers core physics in depth, including classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and statistical physics, progressing to more advanced topics as you develop. The programme also includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you structured professional and international experience as part of your studies. The placement year in particular provides invaluable industry experience, often in research, engineering, or technology organisations, and the year abroad gives you exposure to a different scientific culture and academic environment. Together these features mean you graduate with both rigorous scientific training and real professional experience. Physics graduates are sought across a wide range of sectors. Many move into research and development in technology, defence, energy, and the physical sciences. Others enter finance, particularly quantitative and modelling roles, computing and software engineering, healthcare technology, and telecommunications. Teaching is a consistent demand area.
