MPhys Physics with Industrial Placement
About this course
Physics is the discipline that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the natural world, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the propagation of light, the mechanics of fluids, and the dynamics of complex systems. Studying physics to master's level takes you from the foundational principles you will already know towards the frontiers of research, where quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, statistical physics and condensed matter theory come together in ways that are intellectually demanding and practically important. At Heriot-Watt you will follow a five-year full-time MPhys programme that combines advanced physics education with an industrial placement in year four. The placement is a defining feature of this degree, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional environment in fields such as photonics, quantum technology or engineering. These are areas where Heriot-Watt has particular research strength, and the connections between academic study and industry are therefore especially direct. The industrial placement year extends the programme to five years and means you graduate with genuine professional experience as well as your academic qualification, a combination that significantly strengthens your position in the graduate job market. Physics graduates are among the most versatile in the labour market, and the industrial placement makes this degree particularly strong for those wishing to move directly into industry. Careers in photonics, semiconductor technology, defence, telecommunications, medical physics, instrumentation, and engineering are all natural destinations. The analytical and problem-solving capabilities developed through a physics degree are also widely valued in data science, finance, consultancy, and technology management. Many graduates continue to doctoral study, either in physics itself or in related applied sciences, while others use the MPhys qualification to pursue chartered physicist status through the Institute of Physics.
