BSc Physics with Astrophysics
About this course
Physics with astrophysics combines the foundational discipline of physics with a specialisation that addresses some of the largest questions imaginable: the nature of stars, galaxies, black holes, the origin of the universe and the fundamental laws that govern it on cosmic scales. Physics provides the mathematical and experimental toolkit, covering mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum theory and relativity, while astrophysics applies these principles to astronomical objects and processes, from stellar evolution and planetary systems to cosmological structure and the physics of extreme environments. At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year full-time programme combines rigorous physics training with specialist content in astrophysics. You will study the core areas of physics systematically, developing your mathematical skills alongside laboratory and computational capabilities, and then explore astrophysical topics including stellar structure, galactic dynamics, observational techniques and the physics of the early universe. The programme develops both your theoretical understanding and your capacity to work with data, models and scientific literature in a disciplined and critical way. Physics graduates are in demand across a remarkably wide range of careers, well beyond the obvious path into academic research. Data science, financial modelling, engineering, technology, defence, healthcare physics, energy and scientific communication all recruit physicists, valued for their quantitative rigour and problem-solving capability. Astrophysics graduates share this versatility, while those who wish to pursue research in astronomy or cosmology typically proceed to postgraduate study. Masters and doctoral programmes in physics, astrophysics, data science, space science or related fields provide a route for those who wish to develop specialist research expertise.
