MPhys Physics
About this course
Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the basic laws governing matter, energy, space, and time. From the behaviour of subatomic particles through to the large-scale structure of the universe, physics operates at the extremes of scale and pushes the boundaries of what can be known and measured. It is also a discipline of exceptional practical importance, underpinning technologies that range from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging and satellite navigation. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle this four-year full-time programme covers the core of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, relativity, and contemporary topics in astrophysics and condensed matter physics. You will develop mathematical rigour alongside physical intuition, and practical laboratory work is central to the degree, developing experimental skills, data analysis, and the habit of connecting theoretical predictions with measured results. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in a physics-related environment and an international academic perspective. The placement year is particularly valuable for physics graduates, who often work in industries where sustained professional experience is a genuine differentiator, whether in the technology sector, energy, aerospace, or medical physics. The year abroad adds an international dimension and academic breadth. Graduates go on to careers in research, technology, engineering, finance, data science, energy, healthcare, and education. Physics is consistently cited as one of the degrees with the broadest career outcomes, because the analytical and mathematical skills it develops are valued across almost every sector. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in physics, astrophysics, materials science, or engineering.
